Costume info

One of the huge benefits of the Barveenok Ukrainian Dance Club is supplied costumes. These costumes are custom and handmade and many come from Ukraine. Due to the delicacy and importance of these specialized items dancers and parents are expected to follow care guidelines. Each dancer is required to provide a $250 cheque PER COSTUME to be held until the costume is returned in appropriate condition.

Deposit checks will be cashed if any costumes are returned damaged or soiled.

Most costume items can be machine washed on delicate cycle, some pieces are dry cleaned only. Is the the dancer and parent’s responsibility to return ALL COSTUMES from the dance year to the costume director in good and clean condition By June 15th of the dance year in order for deposit cheque to be returned.

Dancers participating in the club’s summer performances must return costumes at the fall registration night.

Dancers must purchase their own performance footwear, make up, and accessories. These requirements are provided in detail at the beginning of the dance year. Keeping you in touch with all of the developments regarding costuming is our Costume Coordinator. They are at hand to answer your questions and to ensure that all dancers are looking their best when it comes time to hit the stage.

Each region of dance requires a specific costume. The care and attention that are put into costumes often affect the adjudication scores at festivals.

Each level of dance has its own set of costumes.  Barveenok has costumes for the following regions:

  • Central Region

  • Hutzul Region

  • Bukovynian Region

  • Transcarpathian Region

  • Polissia Region

  • Volyn Region

Costume nights are pre-determined by the Costume Director and are held in October.  On the costume night of your group, your child will be fitted and assigned the necessary pieces for each outfit you’ll need for each dance your child is in.  You’ll be able to purchase the necessary supplies to complete the outfit if needed. On costume night, a damage deposit is required dated for May of the following year for the full replacement cost of the costume.  Costumes will not be assigned or sent home without parent/guardian in attendance to assist in the fitting.

The Costume Director will assist you as much as they can in directing you where to purchase the extra supplies you might need to complete your costume.  These supplies are then owned by the member. Any alterations that you make to the costume should first go through the costume director.

Periodically throughout the year, the Costume director will have costume “checks” together with the Instructors to ensure the club’s costume requirements are being met.  It is the parent’s/dancer’s responsibility to be kept informed of their requirements well in advance of any performances.  A dancer choosing to enter competitions and to do a region that is not taught at their level of instruction must make a special effort to coordinate their costuming needs.
